According to the Cleveland Clinic, “The medical definition of sarcopenia is the gradual loss of muscle mass, strength and function. The condition commonly affects the elderly population and is thought to occur due to aging. Sarcopenia can greatly impact your quality of life by reducing your ability to perform daily tasks. It can lead to the loss of your independence and the need for long-term care.”
And what about your balance?

According to a 1999 article from the Ear, Nose and Throat Journal, “Some degree of imbalance is present in all individuals older than 60. This is the result of a generalized functional degradation.”
“Generalized functional degradation” …is a fancy way of saying..YOUR BODY STOPS WORKING CORRECTLY as you get older.
The study continues, “As the functional degradation progresses, the imbalance occurs during everyday activities, independent ambulation becomes difficult, and the likelihood of falls increases. When instability is constant, the individual resorts to the use of a cane, a walker, or a wheelchair.”
Research in the 1999 study on balance and aging in Laryngoscope Journal states, “As we age, we lose balance function through loss of sensory elements, the ability to integrate information and issue motor commands, and because we lose musculoskeletal function.”
Losing balance isn’t JUST a loss of muscle mass.
As the study says…it’s also a loss of “sensory elements.”
As people get older…they almost always STOP doing activities that STRENGTHEN “sensory elements” like coordination, agility, spacial awareness, directional awareness, changes of direction and speed.
BE HONEST RIGHT NOW…When was the last time you played soccer, tennis, basketball, baseball, frisbee, hopscotch or jumprope? Or did anything even close?

That’s the BIG PROBLEM.

“A resistance training program in a group of subjects where the inclusion criteria was 90 years of age showed that even at this advanced age, strength could be improved (in this group by 175%), as well as the cross-sectional area of the thigh muscles (by 15%), all leading to improvements in functional mobility.”
