Quick Posture Check - When standing as straight as possible… and facing straight ahead…if you drew a line straight down through the middle of your body from your head to your feet…Your ears…shoulders…hips…knees…and ankles should ALL be lined up…all the way down.

  • Your ears should be in line with your shoulders

  • Your shoulders in line with your hips

  • Your hips in line with your knees

  • Your knees in line with your ankles

The more forward your head is…AWAY from your body…the more stress goes to the bones and ligaments of your spine and the supporting muscles of your back and neck.

Imagine this…

For a moment…let’s imagine your spine was a nice straight garden hose.

Imagine a garden hose hanging straight up and down with water easily flowing out the bottom.

Now imagine putting a crimp in the same hose by bending the top forward towards the bottom.

What happens?

The more you crimp it…the more the water slows down right?

Your body works exactly the same way.

The more your head is arching forward in front of your body..the more “CRIMP” is in the hose.

In addition to all the blood vessels..nerves…and spinal cord being crimped…the entire lymphatic system…which drains waste out of the brain…is SEVERELY interrupted by having your head out in front of your body as well.

This causes WASTE to back up in the brain….causing SERIOUS cognitive problems.

This is what was happening to my dad.

According to a 2022 study at Shinshu University in Japan, “Subjects are more likely to have signs of moderate cognitive decline the more the head and neck protrude in front of the pelvis when seen from the side.”

These breath-related effects are primarily due to the loss of the cervical lordosis which blocks the action of the hyoid muscles, especially the inferior hyoid responsible for helping lift the first rib during inhalation.”

  • “Proper rib lifting action by the hyoids and anterior scalenes is essential for complete aeration of the lungs.”

  • “The entire gastrointestinal system (particularly the large intestine) may become agitated from Forward Head Posture resulting in sluggish bowel peristaltic function and evacuation.”

According to a study in the American Journal of Pain Management from January 2004, “The relationship of poor posture and chronic pain conditions including low back pain, neck related headaches, and stress-related illnesses.”

The study continues, “The extra pressure imposed on the neck from poor posture flattens the normal cervical curve resulting in abnormal strain on muscles, ligaments, fascia and bones.”

Research presented at the 31st Annual International Conference of the EMBS in Minneapolis, MN in 2009 stated: “Over time poor posture results in pain, muscle aches, tension and headache and can lead to long term complications such as osteoarthritis. Forward head carriage may promote accelerated aging of intervertebral joints resulting in degenerative joint disease.”

And as soon as it started…my trip was over.

After working with my dad on correcting his posture…considering we only had 6 days…(and 6 nights technically)…the results we achieved were pretty good don’t you think?
